Grammar #15: Be used to/Be accustomed to (due Sunday)

First, do exercises 40-42 on p. 281.

Then answer the 3 questions in exercise 44 below. Write complete answers.

  1. Exercise 44:
    1. I think Junko should expand more relations around where she is going to move in, have a conversation with them in order not to feel lonely. Sometimes, she ought to call her parents to ask their health, to announce the situation of her new place, her new job (good or bad).
    2. When I lived in a foreign country, I weren't used to food. Although it was yummy, for my state, I think it was insipid. Because I were accustomed to food were made by my mother. In my country, I was not confident to speak English with foreigners, but now I am getting used to speaking English with other people. I have always been taken to school by car, but when I tried to go to school by bus, I didn't get accustomed to.
    3. I haven't had a job, but if I have a job, I think I am not used to working by myself, because I am not accustomed to living indepently. But I think if I want to have a bright future, I have to get used to with this by improving myself better than before and working on my own.

    1. 2. I wasn't used to the food. (Insipid doesn't describe food; it describes a lecture, a book, a conversation, but not food).

      Good "used to" and "accustomed to."

      And Hieu, you're not even in my grammar class! However, I enjoy reading your writing :)

  2. 1-junko is going to have to get accustomed to be independent in her life,
    keep a good relationship with her cousins and contact her family constantly.
    2-i wasn't used to eat sandwiches every often; i did get used to the local
    food ; i didn't ever get used to the public transportation system here.
    3-i wasn't used to speak in English. i get used to work with people from
    different countries.

  3. 1) junk should call more her family in order For her not to feel depressed or lonely. She should also hang out with some friends to be accustomed to that city.
    2) when I first came here, I wasn't used to the language also food. I was used to my classmates from different countries.
    3) I haven't had any job actually.

  4. 1. Junko is going to have to get accustomed to living without parents' help, in other word, she need to independent. And she will have to get accustomed to solving some problem with her cousins.
    2. I wasn't used to the hot weather. I got used to the language. I didn't get used to the food.
    3. I wasn't used to use VF software. I got used to talk with my colleagues.

  5. She should keep in touch with her family and try to be responsible.2 I wasn't usually eat a burger .I did always eat home made 3 I wasn't used to speak English .I did get to work with some guy from my country.

  6. 1. She used to live dependent on her parents but now she is getting used to live independently. She has to take care herself.
    2. I weren't used to understanding what people communicate. Then, I am getting accustomed the way native speakers talk to others, but I am still not used to speaking English all the time.
    3. I didn't used to the way I have to serve the customers but now, I am getting accustomed to that way.

  7. 1. She is used to cooking her own dinner. Also she is used to cleaning the house and going to many places alone. In addition she is used to buying several things at grocery store by herself.
    2. I was not used to speaking English. I got used to traveling by plane. I didn't ever get used to hearing a lot of language.
    3. I wasn't used to counting too much money. I got used to answering the phone a lot of times.

    2. I was not used to speaking other language. I got used to eating American food. I didn't ever get used to taking the bus all mornings.
    3. I wasn't used to cooking fast the burgers. I got used to doing my work on time.
