Grammar #12:Modals of Advice (due Wednesday)

I'm planning to visit your country at the end of this term and I need your advice. Please tell me what I need to know in order to have a safe and enjoyable visit. Use several of the modals/expressions for advice and suggestions that we've practiced so far: should, shouldn't, had better (not), must (not), ought to, (not) supposed to, could, why don't you, don't have to, and have to. Your response should be in paragraph form.

You can start your response like this:

Holly, I'm so excited that you've decided to come visit my country. In order for you to have a safe and enjoyable visit in (YOUR COUNTRY), here is what you need to know. First, ... Second, ... Third,... and Lastly,... You have to DEVELOP your paragraph, which means you MUST provide enough support for each point you make. A good paragraph should have 12-15 complex sentences. I want just ONE PARAGRAPH.

Listening #2: Immigration from Vietnam and North Korea (due tonight)

Listen to the words of these remarkable women. I look forward to reading your responses to what they say.

Grammar #11: Modals expressing prohibition (due Tuesday)

What are 3 things that I MUST NOT do as a guest in your home or in your country?

Grammar #10: Modals of NECESSITY (due Tuesday)

We use HAVE TO, HAVE GOT TO, and MUST to express necessity. The past tense for all 3 is HAD TO.  The negative is DON'T HAVE TO.

1. Think about your plans for this week. What are 2 things you don't have to do and 1 thing that you have to do?

2. Think about your activities last week. What were 2 things you had to do and one thing you didn't have to do?

3. What is something that all citizens must do in your country?

Online explanations and practice for present perfect and present perfect progressive

This is OPTIONAL, but I think it is EXTREMELY HELPFUL.

http://www.englishpage.com/verbpage/presentperfect.html

http://www.englishpage.com/verbpage/presentperfectcontinuous.html

These pages explain everything you need to know about present perfect and present perfect progressive IN GREAT DETAIL. You will notice, however, that their "use 1" is my "case 2" and their "use 2" is my "case 1" for the present perfect.

Go to the exercises at the bottom of the page. They're EXCELLENT.

Musical Lesson #2.1: Future Time Clause

"Cups (You're Gonna Miss Me)"

Powerpoint Presentation: Present Perfect and Present Perfect Progressive

Sunday, September 11, 2016

Grammar #4: Future Tense (due Tuesday)

Tell the class about your plans after you finish taking English classes at HCC.

Your First Presentation on Immigration/Emigration

Your topic is Immigration to and Emigration from your country. Please explain the reasons why people either leave your country or come to your country. Here are some questions to consider:

Do people leave for economic reasons? For educational reasons? For other reasons? Do they usually return home? Do people come to your country to work or to study? If so, who are these people? Do any of these people become citizens? How long do they stay in your country? What are some of the benefits of having immigrants in a country? What are some of the disadvantages?

Go to the following link to see the grading rubric for your upcoming presentation. You will see that there are basically 4 components to the presentation:

1. Content (30%)
2. Structure and organization (30%)
3. Delivery (30%)
4. Powerpoint (10%)

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-rIza1967iVZnV4dVhXVEtmSVk/view?usp=sharing

I will go over this rubric with you in class to make everything clear.

To satisfy the feedback requirement, you must meet with at least 2 of your classmates BEFORE you give your presentation in front of the class. It is the job of your listeners to fill out the feedback forms and give you tips to improve your presentation. They should check for spelling or grammar mistakes in your powerpoint.

It is also their job to inform you if you satisfy the time requirement. If your presentation is too long, you need to condense it; if your presentation is too short, you need to develop it more. You will turn in 2 feedback forms to me before you give your presentation.

The presentation should be 5-7 minutes.

We will have 11 presentations next Monday and the rest next Wednesday.

*On page 217 in your listening book you will see a presentation outline and on 218 you will see a presentation checklist. These will help you as you prepare.

Musical Lesson #2: Future Time Clause

"When I'm 64," by the Beatles

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGtSpsYURAQ

When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now
Will you still be sending me a valentine, birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I'd been out 'til quarter to three, would you lock the door?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me when I'm sixty-four?

You'll be older too
Ah, and if you say the word, I could stay with you

I could be handy, mending a fuse when your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside, Sunday mornings, go for a ride
Doing the garden, digging the weeds, who could ask for more?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me when I'm sixty-four?

Every summer we can rent a cottage
In the Isle of Wight if it's not to, dear
We shall scrimp and save
Ah, grandchildren on your knee, Vera, Chuck and Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say, yours sincerely wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form, mine forever more
Will you still need me, will you still feed me when I'm sixty-four?

Musical Lesson #1: Simple Future (Promise)

"I Will Always Love You," by Whitney Houston

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_a35UwZlFvs

If I should stay,
I would only be in your way.
So I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you every step of the way.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
You, my darling you. Hmm.

Bittersweet memories
That is all I'm taking with me.
So, goodbye. Please, don't cry.
We both know I'm not what you need.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you've dreamed of.
And I wish to you, joy and happiness.
But above all this, I wish you love.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I, I will always love you.

You, darling, I love you.
